Capital Gain is calculated by using the formula:
Capital Gain = Final Sale Price - (Cost of Acquisition + Cost of Transfer)
Capital Gains can be of 2 types:
Long-Term Capital Gain (LTCG) is calculated as:
LTCG = Final Sale Price - (Cost of Acquisition + Cost of Transfer) where:
- Final Sale Price is the amount received when selling mutual fund units.
- Cost of Acquisition is the original purchase price of the mutual fund units.
- Cost of Transfer includes any expenses related to the sale, such as brokerage fees, exit loads, or transaction costs.
- As of 1st April 2023, All CG derived from Equity MF units which are held for more than a year would be considered as LTCG. LTCG of upto Rs 1,25,000 is exempted for taxation and any amount greater than the exempted limit will be taxed at 12.5%
Short-Term Capital Gain (STCG) is calculated as:
STCG = Final Sale Price - (Cost of Acquisition + Cost of Transfer) where:
- Final Sale Price is the amount received when selling mutual fund units.
- Cost of Acquisition is the original purchase price of the mutual fund units.
- Cost of Transfer includes any expenses related to the sale, such as brokerage fees, exit loads, or transaction costs.
- As of 1st April 2023, All CG derived from Debt MF units or Equity MF units held for less than a year would be considered as STCG. STCG is taxed at 20%.
Important Notes
- Indexation benefit, exit load and other feed are not included in our calculations. For exact amount, please refer to RTA(CAMS/Kfintech) reports
- We show distribution of your unrealised gains in terms of LTCG and STCG in dashboard which can help in tax calculations. These should not be confused with realised CGs. For CG of realised units, please refer to Capital Gains Report.
- Please note that only MF units bought and sold through Equirus will be accounted for in Capital Gains report. Investors should consult a tax advisor to understand how capital gains taxation applies to their specific portfolio.
